History

As missionaries serving in urban and rural areas of Ecuador, we saw poverty.  We lived among people whose homes were cane shacks, sometimes without access to electricity and often without running water.  Malnutrition, illness, poor education, and squalid living conditions were so common as to be unremarkable.  After eighteen months in South America, we returned to our comfortable lives in the United States, but we returned forever changed.  Having witnessed so much need and knowing of the abundance in the world, we resolved to do something to make a difference.

We started Humanity Corps in September 2003 to improve the lives of the poor with a focus on the principles of self reliance and participatory development.  When we learned of an Ecuadorian foundation started and run by Ecuadorian women, we were eager to hear of their proposed scholarship program for elementary school-aged children in Guayaquil.  In 2004 we formed a partnership with FAHUM and since then have provided hundreds of scholarships.

In 2006 we expanded into the Andean city of Cuenca, Ecuador through a partnership with EXAN, also founded and run by Ecuadorian women.

We’re looking to unite those with resources and a desire to do something with opportunities to improve the lives of the poor.  We’re seeking a little bit of hope for a better world.
