Hope For a Better World

Annika Tutor Center

We’re excited about FAHUM’s tutor center that our donors have helped build in Guayaquil.  It is a dream coming to fruition — a safe and inspiring place for our students and their families.

The tutor center serves administrative functions:  students come here to pick up their uniforms and school supplies; families come for counseling; students and parents attend workshops on goal setting; it’s a place for activities celebrating holidays and International Children’s Day.  And more.  It’s not just a place for homework help.  It’s a place where minds are opened to a bigger, brighter world through exposure to the arts.

All of our scholarship children attend public school where the focus is on the basics of reading, writing, and math with little resources left over for art or music.  FAHUM President Teresa Fuentes also attended public school as a child and when she entered college and interacted with kids who had attended private school, she realized how much was lacking in her education.  She didn’t know as much about literature or art or music.  Mindful of that experience, she determined to give our scholarship kids exposure to these subjects to lift their sights beyond the crowded, dirty day to day living they know too well.  The tutor center is a place for that, too.
